WSBK Race Report: 7th Place Finish for Troy Corser

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 02 28th, 2010

Earlier today in Australia, Troy Corser raced for BMW Motorrad atop an S1000RR to a solid 7th place finish in Race 2. Race 1 saw Troy finish in 9th position after overtaking a rider who crashed out late in the race. Ruben Xaus had a collision with another rider during his warm up, and after consultation with the team doctor, decided not to race. We’re glad to report Ruben has no significant injuries, but rather was ‘shaken up’ by the accident. Further down the grid, the private entry of Team Reitwagen Racing secured a mid-pack result, crossing the checkered flag in 15th position after both races. For their first race, 15th is a very respectable result. We look forward to seeing them race alongside the factory racers in the future. Head of BMW Motorrad race bike development, Berthold Hauser had this to say after the race: “The weekend was like a rollercoaster and we had a lot of difficulties to overcome. We had to manage the pressure on the team, deal with some technical issues and of course I feel sorry for Ruben who decided not to race due to his crash in today’s warm-up session. However, the team kept focused and did a fantastic job. We are definitely closer to the top teams than last year. Thanks to everybody in the team, and thanks to Troy who had a great second race. We can now travel back to Europe with our heads held high. Also congratulations to Reitwagen Racing who did a really good job this weekend.” Suzuki and Ducati split the trophies, each securing victory in race 1 and race 2 respectively. The World Superbike Championship now heads to Portimao Circuit in Portugal for the second race of the season.

MINI Countryman getting ready for Geneva Motor Show 2010

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 02 28th, 2010

MINI’s Facebook page published some photos of their behind the scene preparations for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. MINI will unveil for the first time their latest model: MINI Countryman , their first attempt at the Sports Activity Vehicle market. According to BMW, the Countryman is “a new dimension” and “genuine crossover [that] bridges the gap between the classic concept of the Mini and a modern Sports Activity Vehicle.” Compared to the Beachcomber Concept, the Countryman gets four regularly hinged doors plus one conventional tailgate. We can also see that it sits a bit higher off the ground than other Mini models. MINI Countryman is entering the market with a choice of three petrol and two diesel engines; the power range extends from 90 hp in the MINI One D Countryman all the way to 184 hp in the MINI Cooper S Countryman. When it enters the U.S. market in early 2011, the Countryman will be available with two gasoline engine choices. First, we have the 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine making 120-hp and a maximum torque of 118 lb-ft that will go from 0-62 mph in 10.5 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 118 mph. Second engine will be found in the sportier Mini Cooper S Countryman model which will get a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine with twin-scroll turbocharger, direct fuel injection and fully-variable valve management based on the BMW Group’s Valvetronic technology. It outputs a total of 180-hp with a peak torque of 177 lb-ft (192 lb-ft with Overboost). 0-62 mph is achieved in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 128 mph. Both models will come with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox, and a 6-speed automatic transmission available as an option. MINI Cooper S Countryman and MINI Cooper D Countryman come equipped with the MINI ALL4 all-wheel drive, an electrohydraulic differential positioned directly on the final drive varying the distribution from front to rear in an infinite process. Under normal driving conditions up to 50 per cent of the engine’s power goes to the rear wheels, under extreme conditions up to 100 per cent, offering a new, high-traction rendition of that agile handling so typical of MINI. The MINI crossover will make its debut on Tuesday at the Geneva Motor Show. [Source: MINI via Motoringfile ]

Fourth Row Start Disappoints – But More to Come From Phillip Island

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 02 28th, 2010

BMW Motorrad Team riders Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus will start the first race of the 2010 World Superbike Championship from 13th and 15th place respectively in a 26 bike grid. Leon Haslam secured pole position with a best time of 1:31.229, securing Suzuki’s first Pole position of the season. Corser and Xaus best qualifying laps of 1:32.430 and 1:32.842 respectively show them 1.2 + seconds off the ultimate pace. Surprisingly, these lap times were set on race spec tires for both BMW riders as the bike was not performing well with the qualifying spec tire. Former Ducati Xerox Team Manager Davide Tardozzi has joined BMW Motorrad’s WSBK racing effort for the 2010 season. With Davide in the position of Team Manager, BMW Motorrad is in very good hands. Tardozzi has led Ducati for almost 20 years in WSBK to become the winningest team in the series. After the qualifying session earlier today in Australia, he had this to say: “We made a step ahead although the times and the grid positions don’t reflect that too much. For some reason we struggled with the qualifying tyres, and both riders set their fastest lap in today’s Superpole on race tyres. Apart from the starting position we are in a comfortable situation for tomorrow. The team will do their best to finish the races in the best possible positions.” With a fourth row starting position on the grid, a podium will likely be just out of reach, but with every World Superbike Race divided into two “heats” it is difficult to predict final positions. We look forward to tomorrow’s two-part race and we’ll be bringing you the race results after all the dust settles.

Despite numerous rumors around a possible unveiling at the next week’s Geneva Motor Show, we have learned from several sources close to BMW that the M1 Concept (or whichever name will carry) won’t make an appearance at the BMW stand. Now that our dreams got shattered, at least for now, let’s continue our coverage on the BMW M1 with a new rendering. Harold Wood from 1Addicts makes an attempt at photoshoping a BMW 1 Series Coupe with some of the most common M-brand design elements. While not shown here, we learned in the past that at the front-end, the bumper will be larger and more massive than any M-Package we have seen so far, and the usual fog lights are gone. The massive front bumper will allow air to flow for the High Performance Intercooler. Like the front end of the car, the rear is wider with a look that is reminds us of the transition between the previous E46 Coupe and the E46 M3. Broader wheel arches will accommodate the larger track and the classic “Ducktail” appearance makes a welcome return with the spoiler now integrated as part of the bootlid, for a more cohesive look and additional aid for aerodynamics. As portrayed in the photoshoped image above, the rear valance/diffuser area takes its direction from the standard 135i, but with open ducts for aerodynamic purpose; the duct is separated by typical M quad exhaust pipes. The roof of the car receives the typical BMW M Coupe addition of a reinforced Carbon Fibre Roof to help maintain the lightweight concept. Two air intakes on the front wings gives the M1 the classic M-look. The BMW M1 is powered by an updated/upgraded N55 engine worked on by the M Divison. The 1,500 kg M1 is said to output 345 horsepower. The car is scheduled to officially launch in 2011, but we hope to learn more next Tuesday when the Geneva Motor Show’s door will open.

Wallpapers: 2011 BMW 3 Series Coupe

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 02 28th, 2010

Last month, BMW has unveiled the BMW 3 Series Coupe facelift , the last update to the popular model before its design refresh in 2012. Today, we return with a new set of wallpapers that could potentially end up on some of your desktops. But before that, let’s recap some of the important elements of this life cycle impulse. Just to highlight the exterior enhancements that are easy to see; the front, lower fascia is now presented with subtle winglets on the air-dam, but more than that, the actual area for air flow is slightly larger than the outgoing design, also allowing for larger splitters at each end of the fascia. One more styling difference from the previous design iteration; the corona rings, or halos, as some like to call them, are now bright LED units, with the updated E90 3-Series headlights making a coupe appearance. The rear-lights are also modified LED look and finish. Though they were LED lights before, BMW added their new ‘L’ shaped design theme to an all new, almost E46 LED taillight, underneath the Ls. Holding the exhaust ports is an all-new bumper with a horizontal expressive line that shows the wide back end. While the new exterior features and functions are a nice touch for all of us who love the 3-Series, the real news is the N55 inline-6 engine that first appeared on the new 5-Series GT. It features a single turbo with twin-scroll technology, direct-fuel injection and Valvetronic variable intake technology, along with being all aluminum. The engine still makes 300hp and 300lb-ft of torque with a 7,000 rpm redline. However, the engine now builds peak torque at 1,200 rpm all the way to 5,000 rpm, where the N54 builds peak torque at 1,400 rpm. Peak horsepower is still produced at 5,800 rpm. So not much has really changed, just BMW making more torque available from startup, which is great. Also expect a slight increase in gas mileage due in part to valvetronic. The N55 weighs roughly 427lbs, according to BMW. The 328i’s N52 inline-6 goes unchanged with its 230hp and 200lb-ft of torque. Juliane Blasi, the BMW Z4 exterior designer, led this LCI design effort. In the U.S., the 328i Coupe and 335i Coupe start at $37,075 and $43,525, respectively, including $875 Destination & Handling. The all-wheel drive models 328i xDrive Coupe and 335i xDrive Coupe start at $38,975 and $45,425 respectively.
