LED bulbs able to be screwed directly
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 05 31st, 2010Eventually 80-90 percent of lighting will convert to light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, says Warner Philips, co-founder of LED startup Lemnis Lighting and great-grandson of the man who founded Dutch lighting giant Philips. But based on where the market stands now, it could take a couple decades before LEDs achieve that level of dominance.
About four years ago, Lemnis introduced one of the first LED bulbs able to be screwed directly into an incandescent socket. Today just a handful of companies offer such LED bulbs, and they run about $40-$50 each. Here are five that you can buy now — or soon will be able to buy — to replace incandescents (here’s our cheat sheet on the metrics of the bulbs):
1) GE Energy Smart LED bulb: General Electric says it will start selling an LED bulb by the end of 2010 or in early 2011 that can directly replace a 40-watt incandescent bulb, but consumes just 9 watts, which means a 77 percent energy savings. The company claims the bulb will last 25,000 hours (or 17 years at four hours a day), which is 25 times longer than a typical incandescent bulb. It also will provide 450 lumens, compared to most LED bulbs which commonly produce 350 lumens or less. But like much of these early LEDs, GE says it will cost between $40 and $50 at retailers.
2) Lemnis Lighting’s Pharox: Lemnis co-founder Warner Philips said at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference this week that the company would launch “a full suite of LED products” at the Las Vegas lighting convention Lightfair next month and could one day go public: “Our philosophy is to build the company to last. An IPO is one of the opportunities for us.”
Lemnis currently sells its bulb for between $40 and $50 and launched a dimmable version in October that lasts for 36,000 hours (or 25 years at 4 hours per day), is 90 percent more energy-efficient than an incandescent bulb, and lasts six times longer than a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL).
3) Panasonic’s EverLED: Japanese electronic giant Panasonic started selling its LED bulb, meant to replace incandescents in the residential market, in October in Japan. Panasonic claims the bulbs in its EverLED line can last 40 times longer than an incandescent bulb, and if used about 5.5 hours per day can last up to 19 years. At the same time the power consumption of the bulb is about an eighth of an incandescent. The price is expected to be in the $40 range in Japan.
4) Philips’ LED Bulb: This week Dutch lighting conglomerate Philips announced it will start selling a 12-watt LED bulb by the end of 2010 that can replace a 60-watt incandescent. The bulb produces 806 lumens, has a lifetime of 25,000 hours and is 80 percent more energy efficient than an incandescent bulbs

Floyd Landis Fallout: What is Doping, Anyway?
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 05 25th, 2010Cyclist Floyd Landis has stirred up a hornet’s nest by admitting that he used performance enhancing drugs and accusing other U.S. cycling stars, including Lance Armstrong, of doing the same. (Armstrong dismissed those claims today, saying he “has nothing to hide.” Here’s the live blog transcript from his press conference.)
As the term is used now, “doping” means taking substances to specifically improve performance. For the lowdown, we called Jonathan Dugas, an exercise scientist and visiting clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. (With Ross Tucker, he runs the Science of Sport blog.) Here’s a primer to the methods most commonly associated with cycling. (All are banned in cycling.)
Blood doping/transfusions: Endurance athletes like cyclists benefit from more red blood cells, which transport oxygen. So athletes will inject these cells before big competitions, either their own (taken well ahead of the event and stored) or someone else’s. The latter is easy to detect; the former, nearly impossible, since it’s your own blood, says Dugas. The exception is if an athlete was using some other detectable banned substance when the blood was taken and socked away, and it triggers a positive test once it’s been re-injected.
Erythropoietin (EPO): This substance, which occurs naturally in the body, stimulates production of red blood cells, says Dugas. There’s a test for it, but many athletes say they can beat it using various timing methods, he says. (For example, a cyclist could withdraw blood ahead of a competition and store it, then use EPO to build back up those red blood cells in a hurry and improve his training. Then he could put the clean blood back during competition.)
Steroids: Cyclists, like baseball players, will take various steroids to build lean muscle and improve recovery after tough workouts. (Landis tested positive for testosterone after his 2006 Tour de France victory and lost the title.) Yes, things like testosterone occur naturally, says Dugas, but a screening test will look for an irregular ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, a sign that an athlete has been doping. A skewed ratio will trigger a detailed analysis to detect synthetic testosterone. However, Dugas says, as the BALCO scandal shows, “we’d be foolish to think there aren’t undetectable [steroids] being used. From a chemistry standpoint, they’re not too hard to synthesize.”
Human growth hormone (HGH): HGH stimulates cellular regeneration and tissue repair. A study published earlier this year showed limited athletic performance gains — and no improvement to endurance — but Dugas says studies don’t capture HGH’s potential to boost performance. “It allows you to punish yourself into a coma during training and recover very quickly,” he says. “If you can sustain higher training loads, you adapt better.” There’s a test for HGH, but it’s unclear how good it is or whether it’s being widely used in cycling, he says.
“Genetic doping”: This refers to injecting anything that causes a certain gene to be expressed or suppressed, depending on the athletic goal, says Dugas. (A sprinter might want to put the gas on a muscle-building gene, while some athletes might want to put the brakes on the expression of something that keeps them from performing, he says.) “We’d be naive to think that it’s not happening,” he says. (Here’s what Sports Illustrated recently said about gene doping.)
There haven’t been many reports (though here’s one!) of cyclists using drugs like modafinil, which acts on the central nervous system to improve wakefulness and focus. (Track and field athletes have been caught taking the drug.) But it doesn’t really matter if something has been proven to work, says Dugas. “If athletes think something will help them — or their doctors do — they will take it.”
Blood bonus: Health columnist Melinda Beck recently explained how “blood spinning” differs from blood doping.
Update: This post has been updated to include a report of a cyclist who tested positive for modafinil and to include the transcript of a live blog of Armstrong’s press conference.
Comment: how much microcredit is too much?
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 05 25th, 2010The detractors of micro-credit often point to clients becoming over indebted, or having more than one micro-loan out from multiple providers. Responsible micro-credit banks are trying to address the issue. An essay in the Huffington Post today gives one take on answering this issue.
Elisabeth Rhyne from the Center for Financial Inclusivness points out that overindebedness is often hard to determine in the under-developed world. Rhyne says one way to answer this problem is by determining the about of sacrifices one makes to pay off the loan.
Overindebtedness is sometimes equated with multiple borrowing. In many markets where microfinance has grown fast, microlenders crowd in to compete with one another to reach a finite number of customers. In these settings, poor clients often take loans from several competing lenders. Some may even use one loan to pay off another. Is that overindebtedness? Not necessarily.
Middle class people often juggle credit cards, mortgages, car and school loans successfully, and the same goes for the poor. A pathbreaking book published in 2009, Portfolios of the Poor: How the World’s Poor Live on $2 a Day, reveals that the vast majority of the world’s poor lead complex financial lives. They continually tap relatives, employers, savings clubs, and informal moneylenders to keep their financial lives on track.
It is not uncommon for a poor household in Bangladesh or South Africa to “turn over” — borrow, lend, deposit, withdraw — ten times the net household worth in the course of a year. Rapid turnover is necessary in large part because the incomes of the poor tend to be uneven and unstable as well as low. They need financial intermediation to tide them over periods of little or no income.
If poor people already have many financial arrangements at a time, then multiple loans from microlenders are not alone evidence of a problem. It’s the stress in debt stress that needs to be examined.
The definition of overindebtedness I favor, developed in dialogue with Richard Rosenberg of the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor, who has explored the question in depth on the CGAP blog, revolves around the idea of sacrifice. If a family has to make sacrifices that significantly affect their quality of life, or if a micro-business has to make sacrifices that reduce its income generating capability, that’s debt stress.
Many people get into debt stress at some points in their lives. They scrimp on groceries for a couple of weeks to have the cash for next month’s loan payment. Or they miss loan payments because a lingering illness keeps them away from their business. That’s acute overindebtedness. While acute debt stress can be serious, some temporary overindebtedness is a normal part of the ups and downs of life; it might not mean that a person has borrowed too much.

The Power of Affirmations
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 05 22nd, 2010Imagine that you are swimming with your friends in a swimming pool. They swim fifteen rounds, something you have never done before, and desiring to win the respect of your friends, you want to show them that you can make it too. You start swimming, and at the same time keep repeating in your mind, “I can do it, I can do it…”. You keep thinking and believing that you are going to complete the fifteen rounds. What are you actually doing? You are repeating positive affirmations.
More than often, people repeat in their minds negative words and statements concerning the situations and events in their lives, and consequently bring upon themselves undesirable situations. Words and statements work both ways, to build or destroy. It is the way we use them that determines whether they are going to bring good or harmful results.
Often, people repeat negative statements in their minds, without even being aware of what they are doing. Do you keep thinking and telling yourself that you cannot do something, that you are too lazy, lack inner strength or that you are going to fail? Your subconscious mind accepts as true what you keep saying, and eventually attracts corresponding events and situations into your life, irrespective whether they are good or bad for you, so why not choose only positive statements?
Affirmations program the mind in the same way commands and scripts program a computer. They work in the same manner as creative visualization. The repeated words help you focus your mind on your aim, and automatically build corresponding mental images in the conscious mind, which affect the subconscious mind. The conscious mind, the mind you think with, starts this process, and then the subconscious mind takes charge. By using this process consciously and intently, you can affect your subconscious mind and thereby transform your habits, behavior, mental attitude and reactions, and even reshape your external life.
Sometimes results appear quickly, but often more time is required. Depending on your goal, sometimes you might attain immediate results, and sometimes it might take days, weeks, months or more. Getting results depends on several factors, such as the time, focus, faith and feelings you invest in repeating your affirmations, on the strength of your desire, and on how big or small is your goal.
It is important to understand that repeating positive affirmations for a few minutes, and then thinking negatively the rest of the day, neutralizes the effects of the positive words. You have to refuse thinking negative thoughts, if you wish to attain positive results.
Tiny Dancer
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 05 21st, 2010I’m pretty well regimented when it comes to working out & normally get five to six days in a week. It helps regulate my mood & clears my mind like nothing else. My best workouts include some form of dancing, from ballet, burlesque, latin to go-go. Whatever it is, as long as I can move my hips, I’m happy. I was always a dancer as a kid; I started in ballet & tap at 3 and progressed to ballroom in my teens. It’s just something that I’m inherently drawn to & good at. I don’t have to think, my being just becomes an expression of the music. I pick up routines quickly and can let my body take over while my mind takes a well deserved rest. My typically clumsy self transcends into the ultimate of femininity, smoothly transitioning between steps, my hips melting into each move gradually. All the stress seems to work itself out between my muscles, seeping through my skin and disappearing, even if only for half an hour.
Ballet is the medium in which I feel the most feminine. I’m not sure if it’s the posture, the gentile nature of the movement, or the grace needed, but I am immediately in touch with my femininity, acutely aware of my body and the way it’s portrayed. There’s something arousing about being in tune with your very essence. Burlesque is what I turn to when I want to feel sexy. I like how it plays with your sexuality, leaving lingering thoughts and suggestions in the onlookers mind. The fine line between playful and sexy, walked with the sexiest of heels
I like being coy all while shimmying and shaking my assets. Meow. There’s something fierce about latin dancing- the passion, the intensity, the connection between the partners. There’s a story between the two dancers, but they can’t explain it, they have to show it, convince you of it. It’s the best foreplay, if you can dance that is
There is something to be said for someone who can move. It doesn’t have to all out choreographed (in fact it probably shouldn’t be), but if you have a sense of movement & rhythm then we’re good. I always like watching back-up dancers moving so fluently, with an understanding of the human body, and how it can be made to move. Of course, dancing ability does not necessarily correlate with fucking ability. What it does show is that you’re in tune, or at least comfortable, with your body, knowing what it can do, how it can feel. At the very least, it’s eye candy and who doesn’t like that?
I’d love to try pole dancing sometime, it’s supposed to be a great workout and, if you didn’t know, it’s slightly sexy! If anyone’s tried it, let me know, I’d love to hear your experience.

Configuring your cPanel Dedicated Server in 5 Quick Steps
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 05 14th, 2010In this post we are going to cover the five quick steps you can take to make sure your new cPanel dedicated server is ready to handle your new websites. While we handle the initial installation of the operating system and configuration of the network interfaces, there are still a few steps to take before the cPanel dedicated server is ready.
1. Completing the initial cpanel server setup when you first login.
Most people tend to move through this critical step just clicking on the defaults, and in some cases that’s okay. But, there are a few very useful options to fill out here that will make your life much easier in the long run. First, make sure that the server’s hostname and primary/secondary nameserver entries are correct. cPanel will try attempt to configure most of this for you based on the hostname that we set in the initial setup, but it’s still a good idea to double-check this setting. Second, make sure to setup a contact email address for your cPanel dedicated servers. A SingleHop cPanel dedicated server will notify you of problems quickly so you can react before things get out of hand, or call in to our support line so we can check the problem out for you.
2. Running Apache Update for your cPanel Servers
This step is very important for the setup of your secure cPanel dedicated server, as it will dictate the types of PHP scripts and commands that can be used on your sites. Using the interface is fairly easy, all you need to do is check the appropriate boxes for the PHP version and modules that you need and then click “Start Build”. It’s very important that you do not close the browser window while this is working, as the process will need to be restarted if you do. It should be completed in anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, but if it takes longer than an hour or fails you should notify our support so we can troubleshoot the problem in your setup of your cPanel dedicated server.
3. Creating Packages for your cPanel dedicated server Accounts
Some only think this should apply if you intend to use the cPanel dedicated server to host others websites, but we see it as a quick and easy way to ensure that your sites don’t consume all of the resources for your cPanel Dedicated server. This can be setup from the Package Manager in WHM and only takes a few minutes to do. Doing this will allow your sites can be setup quickly and efficiently, while also guaranteeing that there will be ample resources available for your other sites.
4. Check out the Security Center in WHM
This is probably one of the most overlooked sections in WHM, but it has the possibility for enabling a greater level of security for your secure cPanel dedicated server. First off, click on the Compilers Tweak section and only enable compiler access for the users that need it like ‘root’ and ‘apache’. One user that should never need access to the compilers is the user ‘nobody’. Many common exploits depend on a working C/C++ compiler on the target system to work, enabling this tweak will disallow that from happening. Second, the SMTP Tweak and Shell Fork Bond Protection should both be enabled. The first prevents unauthorized users from bypassing the mail server to send mail, which is a common trick for most spammers. The second will keep a user with SSH access from crippling your server with a fork bomb that will consume most of the servers available resources and possible crash the server.
5. Configuring Backups to your cPanel Dedicated Server
We all know how important a good backup hosting can be, and setting them up on our cPanel dedicated servers is very simple. Just login to WHM and go to Backup, then Configure Backup and check the Enabled box. After that, you can choose the length for backup retention and the days you want it to run. The default settings work for most people, but some may need to tailor it to fit specific needs like total free disk space. As an added bonus, backups can be setup to transfer files to an off-server FTP account on one of our backup servers. Also, the backup script is setup to run at night as well to conserve resources and maintain the integrity of your cPanel dedicated server.
