Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 06 25th, 2010Hosting services limited to the Web:
Many large companies who are not internet service providers also need a computer permanently connected to the web so they can send email, files, etc. to other sites. They may also use the computer as a website host so they can provide details of their goods and services to anyone interested. Additionally these people may decide to place online orders.
- Free web hosting service: offered by different companies with limited services, sometimes supported by advertisements, and often limited when compared to paid hosting.
- Shared web hosting service: one’s website is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands. Typically, all domains may share a common pool of server resources, such as RAM and the CPU. The features available with this type of service can be quite extensive. A shared website may be hosted with a reseller.
- Reseller web hosting: allows clients to become web hosts themselves. Resellers could function, for individual domains, under any combination of these listed types of hosting, depending on who they are affiliated with as a provider. Resellers’ accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a collocated server. Many resellers provide a nearly identical service to their provider’s shared hosting plan and provide the technical support themselves.
- Virtual Dedicated Server: also known as a Virtual Private Server (VPS), divides server resources into virtual servers, where resources can be allocated in a way that does not directly reflect the underlying hardware. VPS will often be allocated resources based on a one server to many VPSs relationship, however virtualisation may be done for a number of reasons, including the ability to move a VPS container between servers. The users may have root access to their own virtual space. Customers are sometimes responsible for patching and maintaining the server.
- Dedicated hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, the user typically does not own the server. Another type of Dedicated hosting is Self-Managed or Unmanaged. This is usually the least expensive for Dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the box, which means the client is responsible for the security and maintenance of his own dedicated box.
- Managed hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server but is not allowed full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, they are allowed to manage their data via FTP or other remote management tools. The user is disallowed full control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not allowing the user to modify the server or potentially create configuration problems. The user typically does not own the server. The server is leased to the client.
- Colocation web hosting service: similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting company provides physical space that the server takes up and takes care of the server. This is the most powerful and expensive type of web hosting service. In most cases, the colocation provider may provide little to no support directly for their client’s machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access, and storage facilities for the server. In most cases for colo, the client would have his own administrator visit the data center on site to do any hardware upgrades or changes.
- Cloud Hosting: is a new type of hosting platform that allows customers powerful, scalable and reliable hosting based on clustered load-balanced servers and utility billing. Removing single-point of failures and allowing customers to pay for only what they use versus what they could use.
- Clustered hosting: having multiple servers hosting the same content for better resource utilization. Clustered Servers are a perfect solution for high-availability dedicated hosting, or creating a scalable web hosting solution. A cluster may separate web serving from database hosting capability.
- Grid hosting: this form of distributed hosting is when a server cluster acts like a grid and is composed of multiple nodes.
- Home server: usually a single machine placed in a private residence can be used to host one or more web sites from a usually consumer-grade broadband connection. These can be purpose-built machines or more commonly old PCs. Some ISPs actively attempt to block home servers by disallowing incoming requests to TCP port 80 of the user’s connection and by refusing to provide static IP addresses. A common way to attain a reliable DNS hostname is by creating an account with a dynamic DNS service. A dynamic DNS service will automatically change the IP address that a URL points to when the IP address changes.

Gold to Gain Through 2012, Morgan Stanley Forecasts
I poked a little bit of fun about Morgan Stanley’s previous forecast that gold would reach $1,000 in 2012. Gold’s recent strength has apparently emboldened them to up their forecast to $1,075, still in 2012.
No Fixed Prices, But U-Haul Settles Antitrust Charges
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 06 16th, 2010
The jury’s still out on whether the Obama administration will bring a tougher approach to antitrust enforcement than did its predecessor.
But if the resolution in the U-Haul International case is any indication, the early answer appears to be yes.
Let us explain: Amerco, the company that owns rental truck and trailer company U-Haul on Wednesday agreed to settle price-fixing charges with the Federal Trade Commission although the agency hadn’t necessarily accused the company of fixing prices.
Rather, the agency rested its case on allegations that U-Haul had invited its closest competitor, the Avis Budget Group, to fix prices on one-way truck rentals in 2006 to 2008. Click here for the WSJ story; here for the NYT story.
The agency said U-Haul tried several times between 2006 and 2008 to increase rates for one-way truck rentals by privately and publicly communicating with Budget.
U-Haul Chairman and Chief Executive Edward Shoen directed employees to tell counterparts at Budget and Penske that the company had raised rates, the FTC said. During a 2008 conference call with analysts, according to the agency, Shoen said U-Haul would maintain raised rates so long as Budget didn’t respond by price-cutting that would take market share.
The charges were brought under Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act that, a little used section of the antitrust laws that governs “unfair methods of competition.”
The trade commission said that although U-Haul had not reached an agreement to fix prices, the two companies could have imposed higher prices on consumers had the competitor accepted the offer to collude.
Jennifer Flachman, a spokeswoman for Amerco, said that the settlement was not an admission that the company had violated the law. “The commission has not alleged that the company entered into an agreement with Budget or any other competitors,” she said, and the complaint “does not allege that U-Haul and Budget reached an agreement.”
According to the NYT, at least one lawmaker, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R. Utah), said on Wednesday that he was concerned whether the “unfair and deceptive” standard was too vague for companies to know whether their conduct was illegal.
What’s the Deal with Sweet Potato Chews for Dogs?
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 06 16th, 2010In San Diego, I stumbled across a new trend in dog treats … dehydrated sweet potatoes. I thought they were chicken chews (another trend). When I picked one up, it was thick, heavy, hard like jerky, and wrinkled. The manufacturer told me it was a sweet potato. How cool is this?
Yams are packed with vitamins and minerals, calcium and fiber. They’re naturally sweet and great for dogs who want a vegetarian alternative to rawhide. They’re also good for dogs with wheat or corn allergies. Sweet potato chews can be kept for six months (longer if you refrigerate them).
I was so impressed with these chews that I decided we should carry them on FunStuffForDogs.com. I’ve ordered a couple of cases that come in resealable plastic bags. We need to get our crack-shot photographer, Dianne Coburn, to take some fabulous pictures so you can see the texture and color online. We should have them up and ready to buy in a week or so.
I’m very excited about these. Finally, a vegetable alternative to rawhide that dogs love, isn’t greasy, doesn’t stain the carpet, and provides a good chewing experience. Please tell me how they do with your dog. Write a product review or add your two cents to an existing review.
Has the Arizona Immigration Law Impacted Cinco de Mayo?
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 06 10th, 2010On April 27th I wrote about the controversial Arizona legislation that has many people in America deeply concerned. This week we are discovering the impact that legislation has on today’s Cinco de Mayo celebration, a major event for Mexican Americans.
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for “fifth of May.” It commemorates the Mexican army’s upset victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While it is mainly celebrated in Mexico only in Puebla, it is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican pride.
Since last week’s announcement of the Arizona legislation, protests have taken place, and sides have been taken.

There are a few events of note today commemorating this occasion that have been directly affected by recent news.
The White House Tonight
Eyes are on the White House tonight as President Obama will host the traditional Cinco de Mayo event at the White House, only a week after he put immigration reform on the “back burner” for Congress, stepping back from his pre-election enthusiasm. He did, however, call the Arizona measure “misguided.”
Hate Group Seizes Holiday Opportunity
The National Socialist Party (at a site to which I refuse to link) has declared Cinco de Mayo “National Turn in the Illegal” Day and is actively telling people to “turn in businesses hiring illegals” and the illegal aliens themselves. They end with a curt white supremacist message. This group has been active in large cities promoting their agenda.
Phoenix Sports Team Tonight Makes Visible Statement
The Phoenix Suns tonight will be wearing player jerseys that say “LOS SUNS” to make a Cinco de Mayo statement. Robert Sarver, the team owner, initiated the action.
Sarver, who was born and raised in Tucson, said frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the illegal immigration issue led to the passage of what he called “a flawed state law.”
“However intended, the result of passing the law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question,” he said, “and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.”
Liberal PAC Uses Holiday for Satiric Ad
The liberal Americans for America PAC has purchased air time on the radio today for a satiric ad that has a Cinco de Mayo college party busted up by police who “suspect” that the people partying are illegal because they are listening to Mexican music, drinking Mexican drinks and speaking Spanish. It is aimed at the U of AZ community and encourages students to contact John McCain.
Artists’ Self Portraits with Palettes
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 06 7th, 2010
In a link from the article mentioned in my previous post on Master Artists’ Palettes, Lucy Davies pointed to a search on the Bridgeman Art Library for “self portrait palette“. This turns up range of artists’ self-portraits with their palette in hand, a fairly common arrangement given that the artist is usually holding a palette when painting a self portrait.
The linked images are on the small side, and unfortunately watermarked, but think of this as a jumping off point. The images are large enough to tell if you’re interested and the listings make it easy to do a broader search for the artist and their works, including the named self-portrait.
When looking to match a particular image, you might avail yourself of the specialty search engines that perform similarity based image search (my favorite is TinEye).
You can also try the same search on Google Images, though results tend to be more repetitive.
You can also search for simply “portrait palette” for a wider range of images not limited to self-portraits, and perhaps more likely to include views of the working part of the palette, often hidden by the angle in the self portraits.
There is also an excellent post by James Gurney on Gurney Journey about artists’ Palette Arrangements that is illustrated with portraits.
