Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 03 15th, 2010The moment we have all been waiting for: the new F11 BMW 5 Series Touring next to the F10 5 Series Sedan . Ever since its official unveiling this weekend, the new 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring captured the attention of many BMW fans. Some went as far as labeling the new Touring model as being “better looking” that its “step-brother”. The F11 Touring completes the 5 Series family, sans the M5, and along with the F10 Sedan and F09 5 GT , cover a wide range of requirements from BMW customers. Many of you have already wondered why the need of a Touring model when the 5 Gran Turismo was just launched on the market, and that is a valid questions. To respond to that question, we need to look one more time at the definition of a Gran Turismo vehicle: high-performance luxury automobile designed for long-distance driving. The emphasis here is “high-performance luxury”. The 5 GT was built and designed for a niche market, a new segment that focuses on interior space and luxury, while not neglecting the performance. On the other hand, the 5 Series Touring remains a family car, a spacious automobile that is perfect for long trips and suitable for a large family. The photos below portray this perfectly. 5 Series Touring vs. 5 Series Sedan? Well, it all comes down to a personal preference. While not as popular in the U.S., the BMW Tourings/Sport Wagons are an attractive buy in Europe, and combining the new design with the spacious interior, increased performance and reduced fuel consumption, we can see why some BMW consumers are inclined to opt for the Touring model.

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 03 15th, 2010UK automotive magazine Autocar publishes the first test drive of the facelifted 2011 BMW 3 Series Coupe. BMW has substantially updated the 3 Series Coupe for model year 2011. Headlining the changes are new headlights and tail lights, a new hood and kidney grille, new side skirts, new wheels, and new front and rear fascias. Under the skin, the 335i Coupe has been fitted with the new “N55” twin scroll turbocharged inline-6 engine, and may be coupled to the standard 6-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic transmission. Does the new N55 engine keep up with the expectations? Let’s find out. Unlike its predecessor, this engine has a single turbocharger, rather than a pair. The new unit’s ‘TwinPower’ design means the turbo is double-sided, with each set of blades spun up by the exhaust gases from three of the engine’s six cylinders. In addition to the high-pressure direct fuel injection, this engine now gets BMW’s Valvetronic variable valve timing system. Although the engine’s power and the car’s performance remain unchanged from the previous model’s, the fuel economy has been improved by eight per cent. With 302bhp on tap and a diesel-like 295lb ft of torque (delivered completely flat from 1200rpm to 5000rpm), the 335i’s performance is predictably impressive. However, our car’s engine was a touch gruff under hard acceleration; it’s not clear whether the direct injection system or just engine tightness was to blame. And the eternal question: Should I buy one? The 335i is quick, focused and well balanced. However, the age of the basic E90 3-series is beginning to show through. Our car suffered from quite a bit of wind noise around the pillars and the overly heavy controls (especially the steering) made rowing the car along a tiny bit of a chore. New, smoother-reacting, dampers were generally impressive, though they were unexpectedly caught out on one stretch of concrete autobahn, resulting in jerky vertical reactions. However, it’s worth noting that the test car was running on soft-compound winter tyres. Overall, what the rapid 335i Coupe delivers in easy performance it loses in the chassis’ slightly wooden reactions. [Source: Autocar ]

BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team Launches 2010 Season at Sebring
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 03 15th, 2010The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team takes the green flag for the 2010 season of the American Le Mans Series at the 58th annual 12 Hours of Sebring on March 20th. The team has entered two BMW M3s, each competition-hardened from their inaugural year of racing. The classic endurance race starts the nine-race ALMS championship that will see new competitors in the increasingly competitive GT2 class[1]. After a dose of teething problems at the opening round in 2009, the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team found strength in the second half of the season. The team ultimately finished with one win, five more podiums, two poles, and three fast race laps. “We’ve essentially been preparing for this race for one year,” said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsport Manager. “Gremlins struck last year at Sebring, but following a successful 12 hour simulation here in January and two excellent days at the recent Winter Test, I believe we are ready. Last year, the target was to take one checkered flag; this year the target is two.” “After such a strong finish to the 2009 season, the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team has been eagerly anticipating getting back to competition in 2010 with the 12 Hours of Sebring,” said Bobby Rahal, team principal. “Our preparation has been excellent, the cars are strong, the drivers are ready to go, and the entire organization is looking to start the season in style in one of the world’s great endurance races.” The new driver combinations of Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner in the No. 92 M3 and Joey Hand and Dirk Müller in the No. 90 machine proved to be a excellent change with both M3s near the top of the time sheets in the ultra-competitive GT2 class at the Winter Test. Joey Hand, Driver, No. 90 M3 – “In our second year as a team, everything is moving faster. It’s easier to communicate and that allows more time to dial in the handling and speed of the car. The team made excellent gains in the off season. I feel like I’m the best I’ve ever been and I’m excited because I know my teammate and I will be contenders from the start of the season.” Dirk Müller, Driver, No. 90 M3 – “I am very excited to race my first event with my new teammate and the No. 90 crew. The BMW Rahal Letterman Racing guys did not lean back over the winter and we are all extremely motivated.” Bill Auberlen, Driver, No. 92 M3 – “The ideas that make our BMW M3 better are developing even faster than last year. We have worked on reliability and successfully completed a 12 hour test. We have some staff with F1 background on our team and it is stellar to watch an idea form in their minds, and then see it almost immediately put into the race car. As an example, they have made substantial improvements with our traction control. Just when you think it can’t get any better, they do something completely different and revolutionary. But what do you expect… that’s BMW!” Tommy Milner, Driver, No. 92 M3 – “After a year of racing and testing our BMW M3, the team’s mindset is completely evolved from what it was in 2009. We arrive at Sebring this year with an M3 that I’m confident can compete for the win. We know it’s reliable after testing here for 12 hours in January. The car seems quicker already, thanks to a lot of work done by the team to refine the M3 in all areas.” BMW Motorsport drivers Dirk Werner and Andy Priaulx will join the team for Sebring. Werner, of Kissenbruck, Germany, tested with Hand and Müller at the Winter Test and will join them for the race. Priaulx, of Guernsey, raced with the team at the Petit Le Mans and will join Auberlen and Milner for Sebring. In its 2010 season, BMW of North America celebrates the 35th anniversary of the company’s March 1975 incorporation, as well as its first major sports car racing victory, an overall win at the 12 Hours of Sebring, also in March of 1975. Following four days of testing, qualifying will be held on Friday at 2:55 p.m. The 58th annual 12 Hours of Sebring will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 20th. The race will be televised live on SPEED channel.

Photo Comparison: F11 BMW 5 Series Touring, Audi A6 Avant and Mercedes E-Class Estate
Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 03 14th, 2010The new 2011 F11 BMW 5 Series Touring was unveiled yesterday and as always, our first thought is to compare the car against its competitors. The 5er Touring has always been competing for the same segment with Audi’s A6 Avant and the E-Class Estate from Mercedes-Benz. Since comparison test drives have yet to be completed, we will focus today on the technical points and overall interior and exterior design. The BMW offers with 2.97 meters, by far the longest wheelbase in its segment and, consequently, the shortest overhangs, which contributes much to its dynamic side view. All the competitors are within 7 centimeters in exterior length, with the new 5er Touring situated between the A6 Avant and the E-Class Estate. With a luggage capacity of 560, respectively 565 liters, BMW 5 Series Touring and Audi A6 Avant are practically on a par; the Mercedes E-Class is in another league with its 695 liters. With the rear-seats folded down, the Audi A6 Avant offers 1,600 liters, short of the 1,670 liters from the 5 Touring and significantly less than the E-Class Estate, 1,950 liters. The exterior design can be quite subjective and each one of the above listed cars have their own strengths and fans, so we will refrain at this time from drawing a conclusion. But let’s focus on the technical points where numbers don’t lie. All three sport wagons come equippied with four cylinder diesel engines. While the Ingolstadt and Stuttgart based automakers offer 136 hp from its entry-level diesel offerings, BMW responds with a 184 horsepower from its 520d model. The 136 horsepower Audi A6 2.0 TDIe consumes 5.3 liters of diesel, this comes down to 25.7 hp per liter fuel consumption. The 136 hp Mercedes E 200 CDI BlueEfficiency has fuel consumption per 100km of 5.8 to 6.0 liters, thus exceeding 23.4 hp per liter. On a different note, we feel more comfortable placing the BMW 520d Touring against the Mercedes E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and the Audi A6 2.0 TDI with 170 hp. Both automakers provide for these models a fuel consumption of 5.8 liters per 100 kilometers, around 0.8 liters or 16 percent higher than the 5.0 liters recorded by the 520d Touring which also has a power increase of 14 hp. 2011 BMW 520d Touring runs from 0 to 100km/h in 8.3 seconds. E220 CDI reaches the same speed in 9.2 seconds, slightly faster than the A6 2.0 TDI Avant at 9.3 seconds. Even with the larger six cylinder diesel engines outputting 240 horsepower, the BMW offers the best fuel consumption. The entry-level petrol model, BMW 523i outputs 200 horsepower and records a fuel consumption number of only 7.9 liters/100km, slightly ahead of the almost equally powerful Mercedes E250 CGI and its 8.0 liters/100km. The distinction between the two models comes at the number of cylinders they offer, B MW uses a six-cylinder engine, while Mercedes responds with a four-cylinder powerplant. Audi jumps in with the A6 2.8 FSI, a V6 model and front-wheel drive. It comes with 190 hp and an average fuel consumption of 8.3 liters. Replacing the FWD with the Quattro system, adds another 0.4 liter/100km to the fuel consumption value. If you want even more power, the choices continue to be impressive: BMW 535i Touring, Audi A6 3.0 TFSI or the Mercedes E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY. The BMW and its turbocharged six-cylinder 3.0 liter engine makes 306 hp, while the competitors are each just over 290 hp mark. The two rear-wheel drive models from Munich and Stuttgart are with about 8.5 liters in the standard consumption, ahead of the Allroads from Ingolstadt, suffering from the higher friction losses in its drivetrain, and lands at an average fuel consumption of 9.5 liters. With the new 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring, BMW confirms one more time its position as a pioneer in the fuel efficiency field. For those consumers looking for more cabin and storage space, Mercedes-Benz has well positioned their E-Class Estate models. If you value the all-wheel drive system, Audi currently offers it in their A6 Avant models. In a few months, BMW’s xDrive system will come to market as well. No pricing has been revealed for the new F11 5 Series Touring, so we will hold off the value comparison until we have some hardcoded numbers.
