The next generation BMW 6 Series is due to launch next year and several prototypes are being spotted weekly during winter testing. While the car has yet to enter the Final Evaluation Phase where the camouflage becomes minimal, it is still interesting to see overall dimensions and stance. Underneath the psychadelic camouflage, the test mule in the photo above still features some plastic parts that hide the fine details. According to previous reports and inside sources, the next 6-series coupe and convertible will be radically different from the current cars’ styling. The current 6 Series is very polarizing due to the “Bangle butt” it carries, but the redesigned 6er, is rumored to be a “super sleek” vehicle, as seen in these latest spy shots as well. While not confirmed, it is said that some elements from the canceled CS Concept made their way into the final design. The 2011 6 Series is slightly longer and wider than the current generation. It will have shorter overhangs and a lower roofline which implicitly gives the car a more muscular look. The convertible will receive the hardtop as seen in the BMW 3 Series Convertible. The bodystyle has been designed to accommodate the hardtop, so no raised up rear-end. We also expect a larger than usual front-grille, a trend seen in the latest models. The interior design has also been re-drawn from ground up and it is being said to reflect some of the design cues seen in the Z4 Roadster, so expect a very driver oriented dashboard and plenty of sporty elements. Engine wise, the new 6 Series will feature a combination of diesel and petrol offerings. The high-end diesel model will be the 640d, powered by the N57 turbocharged straight-6 common rail diesel engine outputting 306 horsepower. The 650i will be the highest offering powered by the 4.4 liter V8 Twin-turbo engine. Sales are expected to begin in the second half of 2011 with an early revealing at one of the major auto shows.
It was dark, humid, and overcast when I started the day at 6AM in Sebring, Florida. However, by the time I was showered and dressed at 6:45AM I could already hear the roar of high-powered machinery echoing across the flat landscape. Walking into the track at 7:30 sharp, the trailers and staging areas for all of the teams and cars were very quiet with only a few engineers wandering around with an assortment of various tools or lightweight rims adorned with slick tires. Upon spotting a large trailer and an empty, covered corral under underneath a cluster of BMW flags I found the BMW Rahal Letterman Racing Team. The space was large enough to hold two cars plus crews and was immaculate considering it was set up in the middle of a concrete field behind the paddock. Eventually, after catching up with our contacts and having a delicious breakfast I made my way to the pitlane. “Your pass will let you right up to the cement barrier.” Taking advantage of that I walked straight to the pitwall just short of the BMW crews and came face to face with the 2010 M3 GT #90 of Bill Auberlen and Tommy Milner – getting a fresh set of tires and checks by its crew. Ironically, I received my first glimpse of the car’s rear – one of the most different portions of the 2010 M3 GT over the 2009 iteration. The 2010 livery shows off BMW’s new, all-encompassing moniker of “Joy” with a plethora of slogans exemplifying the very things that make up the personality of BMW. It’s a subtle yet aggressive livery for what BMW intend for the 2010 American Le Mans Series as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. 2010 is an important year after all as this marks both the 35th anniversary of the incorporation of BMW North America – turned over from Max Hoffman’s import car business – and, ironically, also the 35th anniversary of the first overall BMW victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring whith a E9 CSL . Additionally, after a disappointing season start in 2009 with both M3’s proving unreliable and unable to complete their first race at the 12 Hours of Sebring BMW-RLR are ready to bring home another victory for their class. However, thus far, BMW-RLR is looking strong right out of the gate. In terms of the team, RLR manages the support, logistics and mechanics/chassis of M3’s while BMW retains at least two engineers who oversee the highly secretive V8 powertrain based on the road-going M3’s S65 engine, though with a heavily-revised fuel injection system. BMW also retain the contracts of the 4 works drivers of Bill Auberlen, Joey Hand, Dirk Muller and Tommy Milner – all well respected drivers coming from exceptional backgrounds such as the World Touring Car Championship in Europe or IMSA or the Grand AM Rolex Series. Also, it is the team of drivers who piloted the M3’s in the inaugural season of the ALMS. BMW spent February 22nd and 23rd getting both the #90 and #92 M3 GT’s ready for the historic 12 Hours of Sebring that takes place this coming weekend. The RLR team maximized their time on track during both days to ensure that the M3 GT is running well and that as many potential faults or gremlins are dealt with prior to 10AM Saturday. One of BMW-RLR’s biggest focuses in the off-season has been to ensure that the issues that plagued the M3 in its first race last year do not rear their heads this year. One such example being that a new starter has been fitted to the motor – an item that caused problems for one of the M3’s last year at the start of the race resulting in the loss of precious time. Additionally, this allowed the team to size up competition noting that the Ferrari 430GT’s from Risi Competitione and the Tequila Patron team are proving to be equally fast with the M3’s. The M3’s ran successfully throughout the morning with little if any teething issues to keep them from the track and to help simulate the actual 12 hour endurance race. BMW have made it known that they will be on the track at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and that the 12 Hours of Sebring would be both a great place for them to kick off their second year in ALMS GT2 class with the M3 and get the car and team ready for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We asked why the aging Sebring track was such a good test for Le Mans. The answer was simple: the track is so hard on cars that 12 hours on the central Florida track duplicates the stress and strain of the full 24 hours that a car must endure at the iconic French track. The reason for this is that Sebring is essentially an old 1950’s airfield converted to a road-racing course whose massive slabs of concrete cause for a inconsistent racing surface for the cars and drivers and provides quite the challenge. The rough surfaces are most notable through Turn 17 – the last turn of the course before the home stretch over the finish line where cars must brake from the fastest straight to a very long, undulating right-hander. In standing on the turn-in point of Turn 17 we were able to watch how composed the M3 GT was turning in and then managing the extremely bumpy surface that causes many cars to skip across the center of the turn. After a successful morning on the track, we were invited back to trailer and staging area as mechanics and engineers spent a bit of time after lunch extracting data from the car and examining how both M3 GT’s held up to that morning’s torture. The engineers and mechanics should be given due credit for the art they perform on these cars to keep them in shape. During the few minutes we were walking around the corral and speaking with driver Joey Hand, engineers managed to partially extract the 4 liter V8 of the Milner/Auberlen M3 and make repairs to an exhaust header and return the lump to the engine bay – without us even noticing! That is how quick, precise and efficient these engineers have become. This is also what it takes for teams to remain competitive, they must be fast both on the track and in the pits. While the hood and truck were removed and doors open, our host was able to show some of the less known features of the M3 GT that keep it highly competitive – namely the aerodynamic features engineered into the car. One of the most interesting yet subtle features are the air channels built into the door frames that help dissipate heat from the exhaust and undercarriage of the M3 while at speed. The effect being that the higher the speed of the car, the greater the suction strength of the vaccum and the more heat that can be dispensed. Additionally, hidden behind the dual kidney grille are the two “trumpets” that funnel air into the engine for cooling which are also flanked by two massive ducts that pipe over the engine and into the cabin to provide air conditioning for the drivers – something much appreciated in the hot, humid Florida air. Also, in person you can truly appreciate how fat the lower carbon front lip of the M3 is and you can imagine how much front down force it provides drivers for massive front grip on the custom Dunlops made specifically for the M3. Later in the afternoon, the M3’s were back to the track and running strong against the rest of the field. Their V8’s unbelievably loud as that roared down the front straight and back out into the 3.7 mile course. For an engine as close to road-going spec( the primary differences being the bump in horsepower and the injection system) you just cannot imagine how strong the engine note is – especially as its note reverberates off of the walls of the paddock. By about 5PM the dual M3 GT’s, along with the rest of the field were beginning to wrap up the day – though the M3’s did go out for one last run of about three laps so that they could be chased by a heavily modified M3 sans a hood, passenger door and modified trunk carrying two heavy-duty camera rigs front and rear and one in place of a passenger. Each rig equipped with a handful of Canon 5D Mk II digital cameras to shoot video. The commercial was shot by the Bandito Brothers of the M3-themed – Living in the Lights viral video. However, we will have more on that for you soon! The two days of testing proved to be productive as the drivers felt confident about the set up of the cars and that the rest of the team looked impressive in action working on the cars. As everyone knows, BMW has a lot to live up to for the 2010 12 Hours of Sebring and they are aiming to shut down the competition right out of the gate. From what we have seen and from the alleviation of mechanical woes that plagued the 2009 car – we think BMW is positioned just right to bring home a class victory. A special thanks goes out to BMW NA for bringing us to the 12 Hours of Sebring testing to cover this event!

Autocar reports that BMW will produce a FWD platform to battle the Audi A1 and Mercedes ForFour in the premium small car segment. In the article, they claim Norbert Reithofer as a source of information on the topic while reporting from Geneva. While this remains a “rumor” for now, we wholeheartedly rebuke this concept and are disgusted at the prospect of a fwd BMW. BMW has been producing rear wheel drive cars since their inception based on a commitment to superior driving dynamics, safety and the “joy” of driving. Speaking of joy, we recall a certain ad campaign that promotes the genuine pleasure of driving BMW cars; certainly no fwd car can emulate the driving experience of a perfectly balanced, neutral handling BMW car. The day BMW produces a fwd car, the “Joy” campaign will become hypocrisy. As an independent automotive manufacturer, BMW is one of the few car companies in the world who can resist compromise to deliver the ultimate product, that is, the ultimate driving machine. Decades of sacrifice on the alter of performance would be rendered null and void by the compromise of producing a front wheel drive car. True, it will only be used on their smallest, entry car – but until now all BMWs have been cut from the same cloth, with quality and performance standards maintained across the entire line, from the 1 series to the 7. Features, technology and engine output may vary, but not one model strays from perfect 50:50 weight distribution and rear wheel or rear-biased all wheel drive. As we see it, there is a simple solution to maintain BMW’s uncompromising production of the “Ultimate Driving Machine” while satisfying the corporate push to produce profitable small cars in the premium segment. Simply badge any small fwd car as a MINI, or even under a resurrected Isetta brand. MINI is already a driving force in the premium small car segment, and creating competition across the BMW and MINI line up on the same car platform is nonsensical and redundant. We sincerely hope that (if the fwd rumor has any truth in it) BMW listens to the overwhelming rejection of a fwd BMW from the core buyers of their brand. Let BMW remain the “BMW” of cars.
The BMW Group once again improved sales volumes substantially in February of this year. A total of 91,758 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce automobiles were delivered to customers (prev. yr. 80,474) – representing an increase of 14.0%. The figure for the year to the end of February was 173,911 units – 15.3% higher than the previous year (150,893). Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing: “After a substantial increase in January, sales year on year were significantly higher as well in February. Last month we saw growth in Asia, in particular, but we also made gains in many markets in Europe, Africa and the Americas. In key sales markets such as the US, the automotive sector is also showing encouraging signs of a gradual recovery.“ Almost all markets are experiencing a definite upturn. In the US, the BMW brand was the segment leader in February with growth of 16.3%. In Germany, the BMW Group managed to increase volumes by 6.8% despite the downward market trend. In China, the company sold 96.7% more vehicles in the month under review. Robertson added: “We are looking forward to the new BMW 5 Series and the start of deliveries on 20 March. There is already tremendous interest in this vehicle which accounts for almost one fifth of BMW retail volumes – and is one of the brand’s mainstays, alongside the 1 Series and the 3 Series. However, primarily due to the 5 Series model change, we expect temporary slower growth in total sales during the launch phase in spring.” A total of 78,248 BMW brand automobiles were delivered to customers in February – an increase of 13.7% (prev. yr. 68,823). For the year to the end of February, sales were 14.7% higher than the previous year (129,085) at 148,112 units. Sales of the MINI brand also continued to perform well. Last month, 13,443 MINI cars, 16.0% more than in February 2009 (11,584), were delivered to customers worldwide. 25,645 MINI vehicles were sold in the year to the end of February. That represents an increase of 18.2% (prev. yr. 21,704). Ian Robertson: “Over the next few years the MINI product family will grow from three to six members. The MINI family’s fourth model, the new MINI Countryman, will arrive in showrooms in September and will play an important part in the premium brand’s long-term growth.” For the first time the new MINI Countryman is currently being presented at the Geneva Motor Show. Until 14 March, the BMW Group will be showcasing a wide range of new models and technologies at the show. Other highlights include the world premiere of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan as well as revised BMW 3 Series Coupé, 3 Series Convertible and X5 models. The 2010 Geneva Motor Show also provides a showcase for two very innovative concept cars: With its BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid, BMW is presenting its concept for a ground-breaking full-hybrid model for the upper middle class segment. Also making its European debut is the BMW Concept ActiveE, a concept car based on the BMW 1 Series Coupé, equipped with fully-electric drive and innovative energy storage technology. Two new BMW hybrid models will be available by mid-April, when the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7 go on sale in Europe. The Rolls-Royce brand delivered 67 automobiles in February (prev. yr. 67/+0.0%). For the year to the end of February, 154 Rolls-Royce cars were handed over to customers worldwide (prev. yr. 104/+48.1%). Following a good performance in January, deliveries in the Motorcycle Segment again rose substantially in February by 24.6% to reach a total of 5,485 vehicles (prev. yr. 4,401). For the year to the end of February, that represents an increase of 14.4% to 9,299 motorcycles sold (prev. yr. 8,132). The revised R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 RT, all strong volume models, contributed to this growth as well as the newly introduced S 1000 RR. [Source: BMW ]

BMW has not forgotten their core enthusiasts. This was the conclusion drawn by Autocar UK after test driving the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is . The sporty version of the Z4 35i was unveiled back in December and aside from the visual enhancements, it brings out some consistent power upgrades. The 3.0L twin-turbocharged direct-fuel-injected inline-6 engine produces 335hp at 5,900 rpm and 332lb-ft of torque at 1,500-4,500 rpm. An overboost function gives the Z4 35is an whopping 369lb-ft of torque. The engine is matted to a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch) transmission. The Z4 35is runs from 0 to 62 mph in only 4.8 seconds, eclipsing the Boxster S’s time by 0.5sec, and has the usual maximum speed limit set at 155 mph. Here is an excerpt from the Autocar’s review: This new sDrive35iS variant shows that BMW is not about to let its roads slip off the radar of enthusiasts seeking an alternative to the Merc SLK and Nissan 370Z. The reworked engine is super-responsive, with the sort of free-revving nature that makes it feel more like a normally aspirated unit than a turbocharged one. It also produces a wonderful soundtrack. Channelling the engine’s added reserves back to the rear wheels is BMW’s seven-speed double-clutch transmission. It’s a little hesitant around town, but on the open road the shifts are more decisive and faster – especially so if you’re in the Z4’s Sport+ mode for engine, throttle and gearbox mapping. For added entertainment and a smoother transition when closing down hard into corners, the new gearbox also introduces a hearty blip of the throttle on downchanges. Should I buy one? Roof up or roof down, the Z4 sDrive35iS confirms BMW commitment to the enthusiast driver. It’s just a pity that at a steep £43,615, it is even more expensive the old Z4 M roadster.
The F10 BMW M5 continues its winter testing sessions and new spy photos have surfaced. The 2012 BMW M5 is rumored to be unveiled later this year with a world premiere scheduled at this moment for Geneva Motor Show 2011. According to previous reports, including some clues dropped by BMW M boss, the new M5 is said to be one of the best M vehicles to date. Aside from the rumored 580 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque coming from a modified 4.4-liter V8 twin-scroll powerplant, the F10 M5 will also make use of several EfficientDynamics technology, such as a KERS system. If the final horsepower numbers will stand, then the new M5 will have 60 horsepower more than the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and similar output as the Audi RS6. The transmission of choice seems to be the M3’s M-DCT system, but a second transmission option might be offered as well. Back in November, a report published by Autocar UK and citing Albert Biermann, head of development at M Division, said that the decision to replace the naturally aspirated engine with a turbo powerplant was influenced by BMW’s aggressive plans to cut fuel consumption as part of the EfficientDynamics program. “We’ve been forced to switch to an engine offering greater low-end torque than the naturally aspirated engine to ensure it can cope with the longer axle ratio,” Biermann said. “It’s the only real way we can balance achieving the environmental improvements we want while retaining similar levels of performance to today’s car.” The increased power and V8 turbocharged engine requires additional cooling capacity and current test mules, seen in previous spy photos, are focusing on cooling solutions. The F10 M5 will continue to feature different levels of ride comfort, leaving the choice to the driver. Another new technology to make its way into the F10 M5 is a new fully electric power steering that offers similar levels of response and feedback to today’s hydraulic set-up. For the first time, the 2012 BMW M5 will sport a carbon-fiber roof. To keep the weight down in this slightly larger model, BMW will make extensive use of carbon-fiber and aluminum parts. The car’s construction will be a hybrid of an aluminum spaceframe for the front section and a traditional steel monocoque for the passenger compartment and rear. The newly unveiled wind tunnel in Munich will play an important role in the aerodynamics of the new M5. The car will get Active Aerodynamics, which blanks off parts of the grille and cooling intakes during warm-up and under light throttle load. Even though a hybrid model of the 5 Series was recently unveiled, the M5 will not be featuring any sort of hybrid system due to the extra weight would add to the car. [Photos: SecretNewCars ]

Talk about an unorthodox and unusual comparison – the german fellows at Autobild puts the new BMW 7 Series against the Porsche Panamera and the Maserati Quattroporte. Overview All three vehicles tested are equipped with a V8 and rear-wheel drive. While the Maserati is the sportiest from the bunch, the Panamera and 7 Series compensate with their overwhelming technology and road stance. The twin-turbo V8 engine in the 750i produces 407 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm. All that brute force is kept in place by the extremely elaborate aluminum suspension system and its Active Roll Stabilization. With the push of a button, the driver can choose between the Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes. Furthermore, the M-Sport Package adds even more appeal to the BMW flagship. Maserati leads in the horsepower department with its 440 ponies coming out of a 4.7 liter V78 engine. Quattroporte also features a sport suspension and 20-inch wheels. Porsche Panamera uses a new generation 4.8 liter V8 engine derived from the Cayenne S / GTS. It outputs exactly 400 horsepower through direct injection and variable intake control. Same as the 7 Series, Panamera features an advanced and complex suspension system that compliments the driving characteristics of this controversial Porsche. Driving experience According to Autobild, the 7 Series is “king” on the Autobahn. The limousine characteristics of the 7 Series stand out and the active roll stabilization works as advertised. With a push of a button, the Maserati unleashes a “hell sound”, so outrageous that everything and everyone around the car is simply intimidated, but yet…delighted. The automatic transmission is fast and smooth in changing gears and it stands out even more during the racetrack exercise. As expected, the Quattroporte comes ahead of the BMW during the timed laps. Surprisingly, Autobild finds that Panamera S, with its superior sporting talents, puts his rivals into the ground. On the motorway, the Panamera marches calmly to the top speed of 283 km/h and acts as a sports car that needs a firm hand on the steering wheel. On rural roads, Panamera S feels incredible light, preparing itself for the ultimate test: timed laps on the racetrack. Panamera S has the fastest acceleration time and thanks to its sporty brakes, delivers the shortest stopping distance. While cornering, the steering wheel never feels too sharp and Panamera S instantly evokes confidence. Maybe not the most accurate or appropriate comparison, but it is quite interesting to see how these three distinctive vehicles stack up against each other.
