The Strange Disappearance of Bill Rogers

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 07 12th, 2010

TODAY I WAS WATCHING highlights of the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, that Tom Watson caper where he stole Jack Nicklaus’s fifth Open title. Poor Jack. Tom had his number.Anyway, I saw a name on a caddie bib flash across the screen: B. ROGERS.B. Rogers. Anybody remember Bill Rogers? You would have to be a certain age, or a student of golf history.

Bill Rogers played with Watson that Sunday at Pebble in 1982. In fact, Rogers led on the final day before falling into a tie for third. No one would have been shocked had he won, for Bill Rogers was the reigning British Open champion. He captured the title at Royal St. George’s at the age of 29. He went on to win four titles in 1981 and was awarded player of the year honors. And he was a member of the 1981 U.S. Ryder Cup team that trounced the Europeans 18½ to 9½, the most lopsided defeat in Cup history.

Everyone expected more big things from Rogers. From 1979 to 1982, he had three near misses at the U.S. Open: a second, a third and a fourth. He won the 1982 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Then it was over. Beginning in 1983, he slowly vanished. After only making three cuts and winning a scant $5,000, 36-year-old Bill Rogers left the tour in 1988.

What happened?

Burnout preceded a loss of confidence. Rogers lost his desire. According to Lanny Wadkins, Rogers never liked the rigors of tour travel and missed his family back home in Texas. His rise in the golf world was steep and relatively fast. So was his fall.

“Starting in ’86,” Rogers told The Independent in 1993, “I hardly ever played a round of golf that I didn’t wish I was doing something else. That’s a miserable existence.”

Rogers took a job as director of golf at San Antonio Country Club. “Selling sweaters and giving lessons,” asThe Independent called it, suited the former golf star. Rogers was content again. Since turning 50 in 2001, he has played in more than 50 events on the Champions Tour. He never regretted his decision to leave the tour, telling Art Stricklin, “I don’t think I was ever meant to be a lifer on the PGA Tour. I think I outsmarted the system by leaving when I did.”

Linen Stays Cool

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 07 6th, 2010

The thermometer is heading north of 90% today here in Cambridge, MA and it seems to be just as hot throughout most of the U.S.  If you are looking to keep things cool at night give linen sheets a try.  Natural linen sheets will stay cool to the touch in the hot summer months.  Also, 100% linen is extremely absorbent so you stay dry in the hottest of weather.

Why not try a set of crisp white sheets this summer?  They’ll look and feel fresh.  Combine them with a white woven blanket and some pretty floral throw pillows and you’ll feel like you are in a lovely summer cottage – even in the heart of the city.

Bangladesh Government Enforces Air Conditioner Ban Despite April Humidity

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 07 5th, 2010

Located in tropical South Asia, Bangladesh is one of the world’s hottest countries, and certainly a haven for ultra-hot, highly polluted urban areas. But despite the heat, the government will begin imposing severe restrictions on electricity usage including air conditioning service, aiming to decrease resource dependence and improve the country’s stressed energy system.

Bangladesh is one of Asia’s poorest nations, and faces severe infrastructure and energy issues. The small South Asian nation is home to more than 150 million people, despite covering an area roughly the size of England. With monthly income levels averaging just $60, many Bangladesh residents treat air conditioning as an unknown luxury, using ceiling fans and ice-based cooling systems to keep their air comfortable.

However, for Bangladesh’s higher classes the ban is a major setback. State power sources are severely limited, with the country’s massive population putting a strain on even the most ambitious infrastructure projects. While the government plans to improve the power situation and create more usable electricity, the five-hour daily air conditioning ban is likely to stay for at least a year.

Unfortunately, it couldn’t have come at a worse time. Bangladesh experiences a three-season tropical climate, with April and May temperatures hovering in the mid-30s. Humidity is also an issue for many residents – due to Bangladesh’s location within the South Asian tropical belt, damp air and monsoon rains can make air temperatures appear higher than recorded.

Online IT Degree Saves the Day

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 07 5th, 2010

I could not remember a time when I had been as excited as when I was preparing to go to college. I was finally done with high school and so, so ready to move on with my life; to get out of my hometown and be independent. Most of all I was excited about studying computers – something about which I had been passionate for some time. I reasoned that computer technology would offer me many career options in a tough economy and would give me the flexibility in terms of where I could live and the types of companies for which I could work.

I was scheduled to begin my college classes in a week when I found out that I had mononucleosis; a virus that – among its other symptoms – causes you to be very, very fatigued. I hadn’t been feeling well for some time and this certainly explained it. My doctor told me that I could not go to school or would I risk even more severe illness. I was devastated. My education was put on hold while I began to recuperate – at home, in bed.

Now that I’m feeling better I am anxious to get into the swing of school but the doctor has advised against it; plus the semester has already begun. So I decided to check out some alternatives and what I found changed everything. Specifically what I found was anonline IT degree program that would allow me to work from home – even from my bed – and still begin my education. I am so excited that this is available to me; it allows me to still start school without compromising my health. I know that this is just a moment in time but I didn’t want to miss it; my online IT degree program has allowed me to get in the game.

Hosting services

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 06 25th, 2010

Hosting services limited to the Web:

Many large companies who are not internet service providers also need a computer permanently connected to the web so they can send email, files, etc. to other sites. They may also use the computer as a website host so they can provide details of their goods and services to anyone interested. Additionally these people may decide to place online orders.

  • Free web hosting service: offered by different companies with limited services, sometimes supported by advertisements, and often limited when compared to paid hosting.
  • Shared web hosting service: one’s website is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds or thousands. Typically, all domains may share a common pool of server resources, such as RAM and the CPU. The features available with this type of service can be quite extensive. A shared website may be hosted with a reseller.
  • Reseller web hosting: allows clients to become web hosts themselves. Resellers could function, for individual domains, under any combination of these listed types of hosting, depending on who they are affiliated with as a provider. Resellers’ accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a collocated server. Many resellers provide a nearly identical service to their provider’s shared hosting plan and provide the technical support themselves.
  • Virtual Dedicated Server: also known as a Virtual Private Server (VPS), divides server resources into virtual servers, where resources can be allocated in a way that does not directly reflect the underlying hardware. VPS will often be allocated resources based on a one server to many VPSs relationship, however virtualisation may be done for a number of reasons, including the ability to move a VPS container between servers. The users may have root access to their own virtual space. Customers are sometimes responsible for patching and maintaining the server.
  • Dedicated hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, the user typically does not own the server. Another type of Dedicated hosting is Self-Managed or Unmanaged. This is usually the least expensive for Dedicated plans. The user has full administrative access to the box, which means the client is responsible for the security and maintenance of his own dedicated box.
  • Managed hosting service: the user gets his or her own Web server but is not allowed full control over it (root access for Linux/administrator access for Windows); however, they are allowed to manage their data via FTP or other remote management tools. The user is disallowed full control so that the provider can guarantee quality of service by not allowing the user to modify the server or potentially create configuration problems. The user typically does not own the server. The server is leased to the client.
  • Colocation web hosting service: similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user owns the colo server; the hosting company provides physical space that the server takes up and takes care of the server. This is the most powerful and expensive type of web hosting service. In most cases, the colocation provider may provide little to no support directly for their client’s machine, providing only the electrical, Internet access, and storage facilities for the server. In most cases for colo, the client would have his own administrator visit the data center on site to do any hardware upgrades or changes.
  • Cloud Hosting: is a new type of hosting platform that allows customers powerful, scalable and reliable hosting based on clustered load-balanced servers and utility billing. Removing single-point of failures and allowing customers to pay for only what they use versus what they could use.
  • Clustered hosting: having multiple servers hosting the same content for better resource utilization. Clustered Servers are a perfect solution for high-availability dedicated hosting, or creating a scalable web hosting solution. A cluster may separate web serving from database hosting capability.
  • Grid hosting: this form of distributed hosting is when a server cluster acts like a grid and is composed of multiple nodes.
  • Home server: usually a single machine placed in a private residence can be used to host one or more web sites from a usually consumer-grade broadband connection. These can be purpose-built machines or more commonly old PCs. Some ISPs actively attempt to block home servers by disallowing incoming requests to TCP port 80 of the user’s connection and by refusing to provide static IP addresses. A common way to attain a reliable DNS hostname is by creating an account with a dynamic DNS service. A dynamic DNS service will automatically change the IP address that a URL points to when the IP address changes.

Gold to Gain Through 2012, Morgan Stanley Forecasts

I poked a little bit of fun about Morgan Stanley’s previous forecast that gold would reach $1,000 in 2012. Gold’s recent strength has apparently emboldened them to up their forecast to $1,075, still in 2012.

No Fixed Prices, But U-Haul Settles Antitrust Charges

Posted by admin in BMW Cars on 06 16th, 2010

uhaulThe jury’s still out on whether the Obama administration will bring a tougher approach to antitrust enforcement than did its predecessor.

But if the resolution in the U-Haul International case is any indication, the early answer appears to be yes.

Let us explain: Amerco, the company that owns rental truck and trailer company U-Haul on Wednesday agreed to settle price-fixing charges with the Federal Trade Commission although the agency hadn’t necessarily accused the company of fixing prices.

Rather, the agency rested its case on allegations that U-Haul had invited its closest competitor, the Avis Budget Group, to fix prices on one-way truck rentals in 2006 to 2008. Click here for the WSJ story; here for the NYT story.

The agency said U-Haul tried several times between 2006 and 2008 to increase rates for one-way truck rentals by privately and publicly communicating with Budget.

U-Haul Chairman and Chief Executive Edward Shoen directed employees to tell counterparts at Budget and Penske that the company had raised rates, the FTC said. During a 2008 conference call with analysts, according to the agency, Shoen said U-Haul would maintain raised rates so long as Budget didn’t respond by price-cutting that would take market share.

The charges were brought under Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act that, a little used section of the antitrust laws that governs “unfair methods of competition.”

The trade commission said that although U-Haul had not reached an agreement to fix prices, the two companies could have imposed higher prices on consumers had the competitor accepted the offer to collude.

Jennifer Flachman, a spokeswoman for Amerco, said that the settlement was not an admission that the company had violated the law. “The commission has not alleged that the company entered into an agreement with Budget or any other competitors,” she said, and the complaint “does not allege that U-Haul and Budget reached an agreement.”

According to the NYT, at least one lawmaker, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R. Utah), said on Wednesday that he was concerned whether the “unfair and deceptive” standard was too vague for companies to know whether their conduct was illegal.
